Lymphedema
Lymphedema is swelling caused by a build up of lymph, a protein rich fluid in the system, i.e. an arm or leg. Persons at risk for lymphedema are those who have had a “trauma” to the lymphatic system or lymph nodes. Those at risk include anyone who has had radiation or surgery to their lymph nodes (including a biopsy) or who has a tumor pressing on lymph node areas.
Lymphedema is a condition that is not curable, but is treatable. Those who are at risk can be at risk for a lifetime.
Warning Signs of Lymphedema
- Tightness or heaviness of limb
- Aching in the buttocks or shoulders
- Tenderness or tightness behind the elbow or knee
- Shooting pain in the limb
- Joint pain similar to arthritis
- Leaking (weeping) of lymph fluid
- Rings or shoes that feel too tight
- Heat, reddened, thickened skin of the limb
Recommendations For Those At Risk for Lymphedema
- Carry bags and heavy loads on the unaffected side
- Have Blood Pressure taken and any injections done on the unaffected side
- Avoid injuring the skin on affected side. Protect the skin from cat scratches, gardening scratches, sunburn, insect bites, bee stings, etc..
- Have ANY infections or inflammations attended to immediately by a medical doctor
- Avoid heat on the limb, including sauna, direct sunshine, hot showers, or baths. Heat can cause edema.
- Clothing should be loose and comfortable with no tight constriction on affected side
- Wear watchbands or any tight jewelry only on unaffected side
- If a prosthesis is used on the affected side, wear a light weight one
- Change limb position often
- Try to sleep so your body weight is not on the limb. With arm lymphedema, if at all possible, sleep with arm above the heart as the lymph pathways from the arm will be more direct.
- If you are overweight, reducing your weight will be beneficial
- Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day
- When flying it is recommended that you wear a compression garment or bandage
- Use only deodorant/anti-perspirants without aluminum
